Drum Point Community Environmental Information (scroll down for important links) The following information was received today, February 2nd from Ms. Jean L Hopkins, an Administrative Assistant at the Wye Research and Education Center and the Harry R. Hughes Center for Agro-Ecology. In December 2011, the preliminary draft of Maryland’s Phase II Watershed Implementation Plan (WIP) was provided to the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) to review the draft and confirm that the proposed strategies would meet the Bay TMDL (Total Maximum Daily Load) goals. Based on comments from EPA, the draft of Maryland’s WIP was released for public review and comment on January 26, 2012. Draft documents are available for review at http://www.mde.state.md.us/programs/Water/TMDL/TMDLImplementation/Pages/DRAFTPhaseII_WIP Document_Main.aspx (When the link opens, you may have to scroll down to view the material). The public review and comment period is open from January 26, 2012 through March 9, 2012. The Harry R. Hughes Center for Agro-Ecology has worked with the Maryland Department of the Environment and the Department of Agriculture to schedule a series of public meetings during the Phase II WIP public review and comment period. Funding through the Town Creek Foundation has made all of this possible. Click here - Environment/Phase II WIP Public Meetings Information.pdf for a list of the public meetings which will be held throughout Maryland beginning next Monday, February 6th and concluding on March 5th. Your participation in the process is important and we encourage you to attend one of the meetings. We also request that you circulate this list and encourage others to attend. The meetings are designed to answer questions that you have regarding the WIP draft. Formal comments will not be taken at the public meetings. Any comments on the draft should be submitted in writing to MDE using the procedure found on the MDE website. SAVE A TREE The Drum Point Light Newsletter continues to be printed in house. More than 600 of the most recent edition were sent via e-mail (saving trees and money). If you have not already done so, please forward your e-mail address to the DPPOA office at office@dppoa.org. Click here - "RainScaping" for ideas that will help you reduce polluted runoff and prevent it from reaching our waterways. RainScaping practices improve water quality, restore habitat, and add beauty to the landscape. Additional significant benefits are increased property values and a reduction in a community's carbon footprint. March Membership Meeting Presentation by Judy Kay - Calvert County Master Gardener The community was fortunate to have Ms. Judy Kay speak after the business portion of the March 26th General Membership. Ms. Kay presented information on the importance of using native species plants when planning your landscapes and gardens (Click here for a list of native species Native Plants of Maryland). Information on Ms. Kay's presentation is available in the Association office and by clicking on the following link: BAY-WISE LANDSCAPES & GARDENING 2011.pdf SPECIAL MEETING OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS More than 30 people were in attendance at the Special Meeting sponsored by the Board Tuesday evening, March 1st, at the Southern Community Center.
